On the north west coast of Cyprus near the sea lies the ruins of Marion. This was one of the ancient kingdoms of Cyprus and became very important due to its wealth from the nearby copper mines at Limne.
SCE came here in March 1929 with the intention discovering the site of the ancient Marion, as at that time only the Hellenistic and later remains were apparent in the surface. They laid out trial trenches in both the eastern and western city, but could only register Late Archaic and Classical debris in the western part.
The SCE excavated a total of 98 tombs, fifty in the eastern necropolis on the sites of Sikarka-Kokkina, Potamos tou Myrmikof, and Evrethades and 48 in the western necropolis on the site of Kaparka. The tombs date from seven periods from the Cypro-Geometric I (1050–950 B.C.) to the Hellenistic I (310–150 B.C.).
