Cypriot White Painted I Earthenware Goblet

Cypro-Geometric I. (1050-950 BC). Height 13.5cm. Diameter 12.7cm, diameter of base 6.3cm

A goblet with a splaying disc base and a tall, moulded stem. The body is conical with an inturned rim, and vertical handles run from the rim to the upper body. Made of hard buff clay with a matte buff slip, and decorated in matte dark grey paint. A framed zigzag band encircles the base. Bands and lines decorate the stem as well as the lower and middle parts of the body. A dented line appears between the handles. The rim is painted, and encircling lines continue on the interior, with the bottom also painted. The handles are decorated with framed transverse lines.

The goblet was excavated by the Swedish Cyprus Expedition in 1929 at Marion, from the floor of a chamber in Tomb 65. It has been part of the collection of the Medelhavsmuseet, Stockholm, Sweden (Inv. No.: M. 065:004) since 1931.
