Cypriot White Painted I Earthenware Bowl
Cypro-Geometric II (950-850 BC). Height 18.5cm. Diameter 23cm, diameter of base 9.5cm
A bowl with a conical base featuring a conical cavity underneath, and a short concave stem. The lower body is conical, rising to a concave upper body and a slightly flaring rim. Round horizontal handles are attached to the upper body. Made of hard pinkish-buff clay with a matte buff slip, and decorated in matte dark grey paint. The base is painted. Bands encircle the middle of the body. The upper body is decorated with a vertical row of chevrons, a zigzag line, and swastika motifs, all framed within panels. A band runs around the rim and continues inside the upper and middle body. Inside the base, a concentric circle is painted. The handles are also painted.
The kantharos was excavated by the Swedish Cyprus Expedition in 1929 at Marion, from the floor (stratum 1) of a chamber in Tomb 63. It has been part of the collection of the Medelhavsmuseet, Stockholm, Sweden (Inv. No.: M. 063:004) since 1931.
