Cypriot Bichrome IV Earthenware Bowl
Cypro-Archaic II (600-475 BC). Height 19cm. Diameter 13cm, diameter of base 8.5cm
A jar with a raised base and an ovoid body, finished with a raised rim. Flat horizontal handles are attached to the upper body. Made of hard pinkish-buff clay with a matte light buff slip, and decorated in matte brownish-red and dark grey paint. The lower body is encircled by a red band, along with grey bands and lines. The middle of the body features grey concentric circles. The upper body is decorated with another red band, together with grey bands and lines. A grey framed zigzag line runs around the rim. The handles are decorated with a grey horizontal line, with their sides painted, and a grey vertical stroke at each end.
The jar was excavated by the Swedish Cyprus Expedition in 1929 at Marion, from level 179 in a chamber in Tomb 75. It has been part of the collection of the Medelhavsmuseet, Stockholm, Sweden (Inv. No.: M. 075:019) since 1931.
