Morphou is a town in the province of Nicosia and a municipality of Cyprus since 1883. It is located in the west of the island at an altitude of 65 meters and has an area of 5,636 hectares. In 1974 the city was occupied by the Turks and today it is occupied. During the 1973 census it had 7,466 inhabitants. There are two versions for the origin of the name Morphou: In ancient times the goddess Aphrodite was worshiped as Morpho. From this name came Theomorphou, which ended up as Morphou. Based on this version, Morphou is connected to Laconia, as in this region the goddess Aphrodite was worshiped as Morpho. The Laconians (Spartans) had inhabited the region of Morphou. The first inhabitant of Morphou was named Theomorphos. During the Frankish period, because the French language does not have the phoneme θ, the Franks pronounced θ as t. So, they pronounced the area as Theomorpho or Teomorpho. The initial syllable the or te was considered by them to be the particle de, denoting noble descent. In fact, at that time there was a title of nobility called Comte de Morfou.

Η Μόρφου είναι κωμόπολη της επαρχίας Λευκωσίας και δήμος της Κύπρου από το 1883. Βρίσκεται στα δυτικά του νησιού σε υψόμετρο 65 μέτρα και έχει έκταση 5.636 εκτάρια. Το 1974 η πόλη καταλήφθηκε από τους Τούρκους και σήμερα είναι κατεχόμενη. Κατά την απογραφή 1973 είχε 7.466 κατοίκους. Υπάρχουν δύο εκδοχές για την προέλευση της ονομασίας Μόρφου: Στην αρχαιότητα η θεά Αφροδίτη λατρευόταν ως Μορφώ. Από την ονομασία αυτή προήλθε το Θεομόρφου, το οποίο κατέληξε ως Μόρφου. Με βάση αυτή την εκδοχή, η Μόρφου συνδέεται με τη Λακωνία, καθώς στην περιοχή αυτή λάτρευαν την θεά Αφροδίτη ως Μορφώ. Οι Λάκωνες (Σπαρτιάτες) είχαν κατοικήσει την περιοχή της Μόρφου. Ο πρώτος κάτοικος της Μόρφου είχε το όνομα Θεόμορφος. Την περίοδο της Φραγκοκρατίας, επειδή η γαλλική γλώσσα δεν έχει το φώνημα θ, οι Φράγκοι πρόφεραν το θ ως t. Έτσι πρόφεραν την περιοχή ως Theomorpho ή Teomorpho. Την αρχική συλλαβή the ή te την θεώρησαν ως το μόριο de, που δηλώνει ευγενή καταγωγή. Μάλιστα, την εποχή εκείνη υπήρχε τίτλος ευγενείας με την ονομασία κόμης de morfou.
