Cypriot Limestone Sculpture

BabylonJS Viewer – DOM usage

Style II:B.; Cypro-Archaic II – Cypro-Classical I (600-400 BC). Height 11.5cm

A statuette in white limestone depicting Zeus Ammon seated on a high-backed chair. He rests his arms on the armrests. A pair of ram’s horns—typical of his representations—are visible on his head. As a deity, Zeus Ammon represents a syncretism between Zeus and Amun-Ra. One of his associated symbols is the criosphinx, a sphinx with the head of a ram.

The sculpture was excavated by the Swedish Cyprus Expedition in 1928 at Vouni, from the floor of Palace, Room 11. It has been part of the collection of the Medelhavsmuseet, Stockholm, Sweden (Inv. No.: V. 251) since 1931.
