Cypriot Terracotta Figurine

BabylonJS Viewer – DOM usage

Cypro-Classical I (475-400 BC). Height 15.9cm, width 6.3cm, depth 9.1cm

A mould-made terracotta figurine of a seated woman holding a child in her arms. She sits on a chair with a backrest, her feet resting on a small footstool. She is likely dressed in a peplos, and her hair is covered by a veil, with only curls visible on the forehead and along the neck. She wears a tiara. Her face is small and elongated, with shallow depressions for the eyes, a small nose, and a small mouth. The child, wrapped in linen, rests in her arms. The back of the figurine is unworked and features a square vent hole, which is partly reconstructed.

The figurine was excavated by the Swedish Cyprus Expedition in 1928 at Vouni, in the Palace, Room 122, as part of a deposit of sculptures. It has been part of the collection of the Medelhavsmuseet, Stockholm, Sweden (Inv. No.: V. 051) since 1931.
