Cypriot Bichrome IV Earthenware Footed Bowl
Cypro-Archaic I (700-600 BC). Height 16.2cm. Diameter 19.2, diameter of base 10.5cm
A footed bowl with a disc base and a hollow stem, encircled by a ridge. The lower body is conical, rising to a convex mid-body, with a small ridge marking the upper body. The rim is sharp, and small, round horizontal handles are attached at mid-body. Made of hard pinkish-buff clay with a matte buff slip, and decorated in matte red and black paint. The disc base is painted black, with a black line encircling the stem. A black band runs around the mid-body. Between the handles is a wide frieze featuring a large central ornament on each side, in red and grey semicircles flanking vertical lines and a central tree motif. Around this are grey vertical lines and filling motifs shaped like crosses with four dots. Additional black and red bands encircle the upper body, with parallel black lines just below the rim. Inside, black lines and bands encircle the body, and groups of black concentric circles decorate the bottom. The handles are painted black.
The bowl was excavated by the Swedish Cyprus Expedition in 1930 at Styili, from the Dromos cupboard at level 60 of Tomb 13. It has been part of the collection of the Medelhavsmuseet, Stockholm, Sweden (Inv. No.: St. 013, Dr. 009) since 1931.
