L. 420:069 :: Askos

Cypriot Proto-White Painted Earthenware Askos

BabylonJS Viewer – DOM usage

Cypro-Geometric I (1050-950 BC). Height 9cm, length 15.6cm

An askos with a boat-shaped body supported by three lug-like legs. At one end is a short, concave tubular spout with a flaring rim, while the opposite end forms a pointed “tail.” A basket handle runs along the top (spine). Decorated in dark brown matte paint. Bands appear on the rim, neck, legs, and handle. The sides are divided into two horizontal panels, each filled with a framed chain of latticed lozenges. Short strokes decorate the spine.

The askos was excavated by the Swedish Cyprus Expedition in 1927 at Lapithos, from the filling in Tomb 419. It has been part of the collection of the Medelhavsmuseet, Stockholm, Sweden (Inv. No.: L. 420:069) since 1931.
