I. 1428 :: Figurine

Cypriot Terracotta Figurine

BabylonJS Viewer – DOM usage

Cypro-Geometric I (1050-950 BC). Height 11.8cm, width 6.7cm

A female figurine with a hollow, cylindrical body and two protruding breasts. Both arms are raised. The face is roughly modelled, with the nose and eyes giving a bird-like appearance. The figure wears an erect headdress (polos), which is flat and rectangular in shape. The figurine is made of hard, light-buff clay and decorated with matte dark grey and red paint. Wide red and dark grey bands encircle the base and lower body. Painted lines on the arms, as well as a bichrome latticed triangle and two crossed black lines on the breasts, are now mostly worn away.

The figurine was excavated by the Swedish Cyprus Expedition in 1928 at Idalion, at the settlement, on the hill-slope close by the subterranean exit. It has been part of the collection of the Medelhavsmuseet, Stockholm, Sweden (Inv. No.: I. 1428) since 1931.
