Artificial Intelligence (AI) & UNESCO 1972 World Heritage Convention

As Egypt advances its national agenda for digital transformation, artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly emerging as a powerful enabler in the fields of cultural heritage preservation and sustainable tourism.

Within the framework of the 1972 UNESCO World Heritage Convention, which aims to identify, protect, conserve, and transmit cultural and natural heritage of outstanding universal value, AI offers transformative solutions to address both longstanding and emerging challenges in heritage site management.

Given the critical role of AI in managing and protecting World Heritage properties, the UNESCO Cairo Office organizes the 6th session of the MONDIACULT webinar series on AI and culture, focusing on the 1972 World Heritage Convention. The discussion will spotlight the use of AI in four key areas:

  • Visitor management and tourism planning,
  • Conservation and site monitoring,
  • Immersive storytelling using AR/VR,
  • Big data and AI research in support of heritage protection

Visitor management and tourism planning,

Big data and AI research in support of heritage protection.

This webinar also reaffirms UNESCO’s global leadership in promoting ethical and human-centered AI, anchored in the Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence adopted in 2021 by all 194 UNESCO Member States. It underscores the need for AI to support the public good, safeguard cultural diversity, and foster inclusive and sustainable development.
