Strengthening Island Cooperation

We were delighted to host Mr. Anthony Cassar and Ms. Julia Galea from Heritage Malta at the UNESCO Chair on Digital Cultural Heritage at the Cyprus University of Technology today. Our meeting follows on from the joint training activity held last month as part of the EUreka3D project, setting out plans for the second part of this activity in Cyprus, which will follow EuroMed2024 in December this year.

Built on the firm foundation of a Memorandum of Understanding and Cooperation signed last May during the ERA Chair MNEMOSYNE project, this is the latest cooperation and collaboration between our two institutions, including:

Both Malta and Cyprus share much in common; both are small island EU Member States; both joined the European Union on May 1, 2004, and both are surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea, providing a crossroads between Europe and the Middle East and North Africa regions throughout history. Importantly, both islands are blessed with an abundance of history, heritage, sites, monuments, and artefacts. They have the challenge to preserve their heritage resources, not just for the islanders but for the region and beyond. No wonder we are passionate about cultural heritage and how we can use digital tools and methods to record, document, preserve, protect, and share our cultural legacies.

We look forward to welcoming our friends and colleagues from Malta to the second part of the 3D Heritage Innovators Exchange in December, and watch for more exciting news on how Cyprus and Malta are collaborating to change the shape of cultural heritage in Europe!
