A Memorable Mission to Muscat

Between the 23rd and 28th of February 2024, DHRLab Director Dr Marinos Ioannides and DHRLab research associates Elena Karittevli and Drew Baker travelled to Muscat, Oman, representing the UNESCO Chair on Digital Cultural Heritage, the Cyprus University of Technology and the EU-funded TExTOUR project at Opportunities 4 Heritage 2024, hosted The UNESCO Chair for World Heritage and Sustainable Tourism Management in the Arab Region at the German University of Technology in Oman GUtech, and the Arab Regional Centre for World Heritage (ARC-WH) in Bahrain.

In a fully packed four days, the away team presented two papers on Digital Cultural Heritage and its potential for Cultural Tourism, fostering innovation, conservation and sustainability, participated in panel sessions, and was treated to Omani hospitality and culture. The conference provided unprecedented opportunities to establish strong links with other UNESCO Chairs, knowledge institutions and commercial partners pursuing the DHRLab’s ambition to create a regional Centre of Excellence in Digital Cultural Heritage in the Eastern Mediterranean and neighbouring countries.

The away team would like to thank the organisers of O4H 2024 for their warm welcome and opportunity to show how the UNESCO Chair DHRLab, Cyprus and Europe are pushing forward the Digital Cultural Heritage agenda into sustainable Cultural Tourism and look forward to O4H 2025!
