From the UNESCO Chair on Digital Cultural Heritage, Cyprus, to the Digital EU European Commission in Brussels, a 12th-century saint emerges from the frescoes of his hermitage to remind us of the timeless values of human life, peace, and coexistence on our planet.
During the TwinIT4EU demonstration in Brussels, the Digital Twin of the Enkleistra (Hermitage ) of Saint Neophytos, near Paphos, Cyprus, developed within the EU Digital Europe EUreka3D-XR Project, showcased a breakthrough in AI-driven XR and Metaverse technologies for Cultural Heritage.
Beyond visual digitisation, this transformation marks a new era: the transition from simple 3D for culture representation to authentic digital documentation of the past combined with knowledge-based processing, which is the foundation of the emerging Memory Twin paradigm.
Through immersive experiences and intelligent digital storytelling, Saint Neophytos “comes alive” from the centuries-old frescoes of his sacred space, delivering a powerful message that bridges past, present, and future. The integration of AI, semantic knowledge systems, XR, and Digital Twins enables cultural heritage to become an interactive living memory rather than a static archive. This pioneering initiative demonstrates how Memory Twin infrastructures can redefine the digital transformation of Cultural Heritage in Europe and beyond.
Special thanks go to the teams and institutions that made this vision possible: DG_CONNECT Digital EU, Europeana.eu, Europeana Network Association, the Aggregators Forum, and all colleagues of the EUreka3DXR project – especially Valentina Bachi PhotoConsortium and Nadia Thalmann and her outstanding team at MIRALab in Geneva for their pioneering contribution to AI-driven virtual experiences.
Special appreciation also goes to the Υφυπουργείο Πολιτισμού – Deputy Ministry of Culture of Cyprus and to Minister Dr. Lina Kassianidou for selecting our pilot as a key flagship representing the Cypriot contribution within Europeana and the European digital cultural landscape.
3D for Culture in TwinIT4EU Part 2 is a milestone and a landmark towards preserving humanity’s collective memory for future generations.
