Cypriot Terracotta Figurine
Cypro-Archiac I-II. (700-475 BC). Height 35.5cm
A statuette with a tubular body. The lower part is wheel-made, while the chest is handmade, and the face is moulded. The shoulders are horizontal, with the arms extended forward and bent upward. It has a concave neck and a somewhat trapezoidal head. The figure wears a long beard with vertical incisions. The face is moulded, showing full lips and cheeks, a relatively thin, curved nose, and prominent elliptical eyes with lids and brows in relief. The ears are roughly shaped, and the hair is indicated by narrow, notched horizontal bands placed closely together. A sword hangs below the left arm, attached to a strap that runs over the right shoulder. There are traces of a shield on the beard and right arm, and traces of a spear on the front beneath the sword strap. Made of red-brown clay with a slip of the same colour.
The figurine was excavated by the Swedish Cyprus Expedition in 1929 at Ayia Irini in the Sanctuary, square L10, level 94.1. It has been part of the collection of the Medelhavsmuseet, Stockholm, Sweden (Inv. No. A.I. 1279) since 1930.
