Cypriot Terracotta Figurine
Cypro-Archaic I-II (700-475 BC). Height 10.5cm. Width 5.5cm
A figurine with a hollow, cylindrical body and both arms raised. It has small but prominent breasts and a broad face with a strong chin. The facial features include an incised mouth, a wide nose, circular pellet eyes, and pellet-shaped eyebrows and ears. The figure wears a tall, wide headdress (a polos). Made of hard buff clay and decorated with matte black paint. Groups of encircling lines appear on the body, and vertical black lines at the back of the head indicate the hairstyle. The right hand and much of the left arm are missing. The nose and left eyebrow are chipped.
The figurine was excavated by the Swedish Cyprus Expedition in 1929 at Ayia Irini in the sanctuary. It has been part of the collection of the Medelhavsmuseet, Stockholm, Sweden (Inv. No. A.I. 2804) since 1930.
