Cypriot Terracotta Statuette
Height 12cm, length 6.9cm, width 4.7cm
A terracotta statuette of a rider seated on a horse. The horse has straight legs, a long neck, and a tail that runs along its left hind leg. The rider has very short legs and rests one hand on the horse’s neck. He faces forward and wears a small conical cap. His hair is styled in two plaits at the back of the neck. Most of the decoration is worn away. On the back, faint red vertical lines are framed by black horizontal lines. The rider’s hair, eyes, and beard are painted black, while the ears and cap are red. The right arm of the figure is missing.
The statuette was excavated by the Swedish Cyprus Expedition in 1931 at Amathus. It has been part of the Cyprus collection of the Medelhavsmuseet, Stockholm, Sweden (Inv. No.: A. 009:007) since 1931.
