Under Twin it! (June 2023 – June 2024), the Ministries of Culture of the European Union Member States were invited to liaise with their national cultural institutions to submit at least one 3D digitised heritage asset to the common European data space for cultural heritage. Twin it! 3D was a campaign by the European Commission and the Europeana Initiative, under the auspices of the Swedish and Spanish Presidencies of the Council of the EU, culminating during the Belgian Presidencies. As of June 2025, Twin it! Part II run again, once again in partnership with the European Commission, and during the Polish, Danish and Cypriot Presidencies of the Council of the EU. Twin it! Part II aims to further support EU Member States in their 3D digitisation and preservation efforts — now with a sharper focus on how the digitised assets will be used.
On the 12th of May 2026, a high-level political closing event was organised at the prestigious Schuman Room at Berlaymont building in Brussels, co-organised by the European Commission and Europeana Foundation. The Ministries of Culture of EU Member States were invited to showcase the national Cultural Heritage objects that were included in the campaign.
The campaign concluded with Hackit!4EU, a dedicated hackathon on 27 – 28 May 2026 in Limassol, hosted by the UNESCO Chair on Digital Cultural Heritage at Cyprus University of Technology, as part of the EuroMed2026: Digital Heritage Summit 2026, where the final event of EUreka3D-XR project also took place. In line with the campaign’s focus on reuse, the event brought together creatives, developers, students, educators, researchers, and cultural heritage and tourism professionals to explore innovative and imaginative ways to reuse the collected 3D assets.
Europeana has now publicly announced the objects representing the participating member states in the online gallery Twin it! 3D for Europe’s Culture – Part II
