Collaboration between UNESCO Chair on Digital Cultural Heritage at the Cyprus University of Technology and Limassol Municipality for the Digital Preservation of Limassol’s Cultural Heritage
On October 30, a productive meeting between Dr. Marinos Ioannides, Director of the UNESCO Chair at the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT), Dr. Petros Siegkas from the MDAM-Lab Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering, and Limassol Mayor Yiannis Armeftis set a clear path for future digital preservation for the city of Limassol and beyond.
During the meeting, Dr. Ioannides presented the detailed digital documentation of the Lambousa, a historic fishing vessel and landmark monument for the city of Limassol, symbolizing Cyprus’s rich maritime heritage. Through www.elambousa.eu, the public can now explore Lambousa’s legacy via interactive 3D models, preserving its unique story for future generations.
The meeting also marked a new chapter in collaboration, with the announcement of seven Ph.D. scholarships to digitise the archives of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria. hese positions, funded by Limassol Municipality, span fields from librarianship to architecture, uniting expertise to safeguard invaluable cultural records.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to former Mayor Nicos Nicolaides, current Mayor Yiannis Armeftis, the dedicated staff of the Municipality, and all external partners for their invaluable support and active involvement in this unique cultural heritage project for the city of Limassol.
