Presentation of the Digitisation Effort to Preserve the Memory of the Displaced Communities of Famagusta

A presentation on the digitisation of the Cultural Heritage of the Occupied Communities of the Famagusta District was held with great success on Monday, October 27, 2025, at 19:00, at the Famagusta Displaced Communities Union (EEKA) Building in Larnaca.

The event was organised by EEKA, within the framework of the signing of a Cooperation Protocol with the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT), with the aim of digitising and preserving the memory of the cultural heritage of the occupied communities of the province, and its transmission to future generations of Cyprus and the global community.

The presentation was made by Ms. Anastasia Fotiou, a doctoral student at the UNESCO Chair of the Cyprus University of Technology, who holds a scholarship provided by the EEKA, under the scientific guidance of Dr. Marinos Ioannidis, Director of the Digital Cultural Heritage Laboratory at CUT.

The event was honoured with their presence by the Famagusta District Governor, Mr. Georgios Chrysafinis, and the Assistant Famagusta District Governor, Ms. Florence Georgiou.

The digitisation of the monuments, traditions and documents of the occupied communities is not simply a research project. On the contrary, it constitutes an essential way of preserving and revitalising the culture and soul of the occupied communities of Famagusta, contributing to the transmission of the memory, identity and history of our place to future generations.

Michalis Tziortas
President of the EEKA
