Former ESR Matevž Domajnko Wins Award

Congratulations to our former Early Stage Researcher Matevž Domajnko (2014–2017, 36 months) at the ITN-DCH Marie Curie Fellowship EU Science & Innovation who has been awarded nearly half a million Euro in recognition of his outstanding work and the success of his company Verus Digital GmbH in 3D digitisation in Cultural Heritage (Landes-Offensive ‘Entwicklung Wissenschaftlich-ökonomischer Exzellenz: LOEWE funding ) from the State of Hessen in #ermany.

During his fellowship in 2015 at the Fraunhofer IGD in Darmstadt, he undertook one of the most technically demanding assignments at his host institution: the 3D digitisation of one of its most complex heritage objects as part of his advanced training. The digitised object was the censer from Asinou Church, an important liturgical artefact closely connected to the monument’s ritual practice. This unique object was entrusted to Matevž by Priest Kyriakos, the person in charge of the Monument of Asinou. The digitisation of the censer formed part of the broader documentation of the liturgy and the holistic digital recording of the monument, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its exceptional Byzantine wall paintings.

Beyond his professional achievements, Matevž has remained a committed collaborator. Last year, he generously supported us free of charge in the digitisation of part of our Cypriot collection in Stockholm, contributing to an important virtual repatriation initiative. He provided specialised equipment and deployed his team for a week-long campaign at the Medelhavsmuseet (the Mediterranean Museum), home to the largest Cypriot collection of artefacts outside Cyprus. This initiative significantly advanced the digital accessibility, preservation, and international visibility of this exceptional collection.

Altogether, these achievements reflect Matevž not only as an accomplished scientist and successful CEO/businessman, but above all as a dedicated human being who genuinely cares about his work, cultural heritage, and the communities connected to it.
