Description of the event

The Mnemosyne project in cooperation with the H2020 IMPACTOUR Project organised on the 9th of May (The Day of Europe) a unique workshop titled “ReDiscover Europe”, which was an opportunity to discuss the role of Digital Cultural Heritage- for sustainable Digital Cultural Tourism in today’s Europe. This exceptional event brought together all the key organizations actively involved in the area of digital cultural heritage and cultural tourism. Besides important keynote presentations the workshop held three key panel debates (with catalyst viewpoints from policy makers, scientific researchers, industry and cultural tourism practitioners). The event was consisting of 3 basic themes:

  • Theme 1: Post-COVID digital cultural tourism – what have we learned, what might we do differently, an opportunity for Big / SMART Data?
  • Theme 2: People – digital accessibility, inclusion/exclusion, market needs.
  • Theme 3: Technology – digital gateways, mobile interactive content / co-curation, dynamic modelling and tourism management.

Involvement and Mission

The contribution to this event by the Mnemosyne project was not only to organise and chair the third theme but also to summarise the key findings which were extremely important for the research agenda of the third group in the Mnemosyne project. The coordinator as well as the ERA Chair holder of Mnemosyne project gave presentations on all issues related to the work and the impact of the project of cultural tourism.

Impact

The presentation as well as the very constructive discussion that followed formed an invaluable material and knowledge for the Mnemosyne future research agenda. The feedback from the audience (roughly 25 key participants) was remarkable and the research agenda of the project was accordantly updated.

New collaborations were established with several institutions in Europe as for example with UNESCO Chair in ICT to develop and promote sustainable tourism in World Heritage Sites, ICOMOS and Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe. The event was very successful with 839 participants of 39 countries
