CONFERENCE: Greek Heritage in European Culture and Identity
The GrECI consortium (GrECI Twinning Project, Horizon WIDERA-2021 ACCESS call, grant no. 101079379, www.greci-twinning.org) is pleased to invite papers for the project’s concluding conference, to take place in Nicosia, Cyprus, between the 22nd and the 24th of October 2025. The GrECI project has been researching the complex historical process of the reception and appropriation of ancient Greek culture in early modern Europe (between the 15th and the 17th century), from the so-called ‘rediscovery’ of Greek language and literature to their full incorporation into the European cultural landscape.
The thematic core of the conference will be the cultural heritage of Ancient Greece and the various ways it became a shared cultural archive for Europeans, as well as the ways in which it was used, disseminated, and functioned as a form of self-identification during the early modern period. Topics on book history and Greek (production, circulation), the role of ancient Greek in vernacular cultures, the use of Greek in religious controversies, or engagement with the material culture of ancient Greece are welcome as well as proposals on topics such as the use of Greek in the early modern classroom, early modern women’s engagement with Greek culture, Greek and the study of law, and Catholic vs. Protestant receptions of Greek.
