EU CLARIN-ERIC Annual Conference 2022

Date: 10/10/2022-12/10/2022

Location: OREA Hotel Pyramida, Prague, Czech Republic

The Digital Heritage Laboratory with the European project MNEMOSYNE (H2020 ERA CHAIR), the leading partner of CLARIN’s Cyprus Consortium, took part in the conference EU CLARIN-ERIC organized in Prague.

CLARIN stands for ‘Common Language Resources and Technology Infrastructure’. It is a research infrastructure that was initiated from the vision that all digital language resources and tools from all over Europe and beyond are accessible through an online environment for the support of researchers in the humanities and social sciences.

The CLARIN Annual Conference is the main annual event for those working on the construction and operation of CLARIN across Europe, as well as for representatives of the communities of use in the humanities, and social sciences. CLARIN 2022 is organized for the wider humanities and social sciences communities in order to exchange ideas and experiences within the CLARIN infrastructure. This includes the design, construction, and operation of the CLARIN infrastructure, the data, tools, and services that it contains or for which there is a need, its actual use by researchers, its relation to other infrastructures and projects, and the CLARIN Knowledge Infrastructure.

The MNEMOSYNE research fellow, Elena Karittevli actively participated in the EU CLARIN-ERIC 2022, following the presentations given. The fellow had the opportunity for hands on experience. The participants received specialized knowledge on language resources and CLARIN centers, Tools and Workflows of the infrastructure, the curation of language resources and the research cases. By attending the conference, the participants were informed about the design of web-based applications for analysis and visualization of relations between terms, named entities and topics. Moreover, specialized sessions were focused on softwares for supporting Ancient Historical Linguistics and Cultural Studies. The EU Data Government Act and how it offers new opportunities and challenges for CLARIN was another significant topic explored at the conference. Elena’s participation in the event gave her the opportunity not only to be informed about the CLARIN but also to establish direct bridges of communication and research collaboration with other CLARIN’s colleagues around Europe. The fellow Elena Karittevli with her supervisor Dr Maria Hadjiathanasiou, both members of the H2020 ERA Chair MNEMOSYNE at the DHRLab, act as the CLARIN Centre’s representatives in CLARIN’s national consortium in Cyprus (CLARIN-CY), which leads the network at the Cyprus University of Technology and CLARIN Network in Cyprus.
