Between 5th-16th December 2024, as part of the ARTEST project Erasmus+, students from the Mongolian University of Science and Technology (MUST) and the Mongolian National University of Arts and Culture (MNUAC) participated in a mobility program hosted by the UNESCO Chair on Digital Cultural Heritage at the Cyprus University of Technology, Digital Cultural Heritage Research Lab.
This reciprocal initiative provided an exceptional opportunity for the students from both Mongolia and Cyprus to explore the intersection of digital tools and methodologies in cultural heritage, fostering collaboration between the two countries.
Our four visiting Mongolian students undertook an intensive program of theoretical and practical activities ranging from lectures to creating their own digital assets using their newly found knowledge. Of course, there was the opportunity to take in some of Limassol and Cypriot history and culture as well with visits to local historic sites and museums and taking the time to experience Cypriot cuisine and hospitality.
During their visit, lectures on aspects of digitisation to document, preserve and communicate cultural heritage were held including:
- How, why and for who we digitise cultural heritage.
- Tools and methods of digitisation
- Cyber Security and data safety
- Archiving and assess to digital assets
- The role of Geomatics and Earth Observation in protecting and discovering heritage
- 3D data acquisition
- 3D Printing for cultural heritage use
- Cultural heritage communication
At the end of the programme our visiting students presented their preliminary work based on their new-found knowledge and skills: a genuinely fascinating connection between Mongolia and the Classical world concerning the use of knucklebones for playing games, divination and cultural cohesion (for more information see the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage inscription for Mongolian knuckle-bone shooting)
The UNESCO Chair on Digital Cultural Heritage at Cyprus University of Technology and the members of DHRLab wish our visiting students, Anand Dashtseren, Batbayar Altangerel, Gerelmaa Erdenechuluun and Ulzii Orshikh Ganbat all the best in their continuing studies and
A big thank-you to all involved for making this mobility program a meaningful success!
