V. 545 :: Figurine

Cypriot Limestone Figurine

BabylonJS Viewer – DOM usage

Cypro-Classical I (475-325 BC) Style III:A. Height 17.8cm

A female statuette standing on a small base. The right arm is extended downward, with the forearm free from the body, and the hand grasps a group of vertical folds of the himation; a bracelet encircles the wrist. The left arm is bent and covered by a fold of the himation draped over the forearm. In these folds, the left hand holds seven round fruits, probably apples. The figure has pointed breasts, sloping shoulders, and an oval head. The hair is parted in the middle and arranged in a bonnet-shaped headdress. She wears a folded chiton with sleeves ending at the elbows, while the himation is draped over the left shoulder and wrapped around the waist. A necklace with a small pendant is visible. The head is blackened by fire. The headdress, necklace, and the borders of the himation and chiton are painted red. There are traces of black on the shoes and faint traces of yellow on the chiton. The piece is made of white limestone.

The sculpture was excavated by the Swedish Cyprus Expedition in 1928 at Vouni. It has been part of the collection of the Medelhavsmuseet, Stockholm, Sweden (Inv. No.: V. 545) since 1931.
