Cypriot Limestone Sculpture

BabylonJS Viewer – DOM usage

Style II:A.; Cypro-Archaic II – Cypro-Classical I (600-400 BC). Height 8cm, width 7cm, depth 4cm

A sculpture of a female head with an oval face. It has a prominent chin, slightly smiling lips, and a nose aligned with the forehead. The eyes are large and shaped like myrtle leaves. The ears are decorated with simple rosettes. The hair over the forehead is parted in the middle, with curls indicated by parallel notches arranged in slightly curved rows. On the crown, the hair is shown with parallel grooves and gathered into a knot at the back, secured with two bands. A necklace with a pendant encircles the neck. Traces of red paint remain on the lips, hair, and necklace. The piece is made of white limestone.

The sculpture was excavated by the Swedish Cyprus Expedition in 1928 at Vouni, in the Palace, Room 122, as part of a deposit of sculptures. It has been part of the collection of the Medelhavsmuseet, Stockholm, Sweden (Inv. No.: V. 082) since 1931.
