Cypriot Red Polished III Earthenware Juglet
Early Cypriot III (1925/1900-1800 BC). Height 16.5cm. Diameter 4cm
A juglet with a round base and a pear-shaped (piriform) body. It has a narrow cylindrical neck with a flat rim, and a handle running from the base of the neck to the body. A spout is set opposite the handle, and a small angular projection appears at the base of the neck. Made of hard reddish clay with a lustrous red slip. Incised decoration includes vertical hatchings and a framed band of hatched zigzag pattern, with small incised dots at the top, middle, and bottom of the band. The neck is decorated with vertical rows of hatchings, and the handle features diagonal hatching.
The juglet was excavated by the Swedish Cyprus Expedition in 1927 at Lapithos, on the floor of Chamber B, Tomb 319. It has been part of the collection of the Medelhavsmuseet, Stockholm, Sweden (Inv. No.: L. 319B:038) since 1931.
