Cypriot Limestone Sculpture
Cypro-Archaic II (600-475 BC). Height 13.5cm, Length 8.5cm, Width 6.8cm
A sculpture of an oval male head with a thin, well-defined chin and slightly strained cheeks. The face has a small, smiling mouth with thin lips, and a slender nose that aligns with the forehead. The eyes are shaped like myrtle leaves. The hair, possibly a wig, is parted in the middle and indicated by gently curved grooves. It falls in twisted plaits down the sides, leaving the relatively large ears visible. The back is crudely worked. The piece is made of white limestone with a buff patina.
The sculpture was excavated by the Swedish Cyprus Expedition in 1930 at Kition, from a deposit of sculptures at level 78.5. It has been part of the collection of the Medelhavsmuseet, Stockholm, Sweden (Inv. No.: K. 356) since 1930.
