Cypriot Red Lustrous (Wheelmade) Earthenware Lentoid Flask
Late Cypriot II (1450-1200 BC). Height 25.9cm. Diameter of mouth 3cm
A flask with a lentoid (lens-shaped) body, one side ending in a point. It has a tall, narrow, tapering neck with an out-curved rim, and a handle running from the upper part of the neck to the shoulder on the broad, pointed side. A potter’s mark, engraved before firing, appears at the base of the handle in the shape of the Greek letter “P”. Made of hard brick-coloured clay and finished with a lustrous red slip.
The flask was excavated by the Swedish Cyprus Expedition in 1930 at Enkomi, on the floor of Tomb 11. It has been part of the collection of the Medelhavsmuseet, Stockholm, Sweden (Inv. No.: E. 011:229) since 1930.
