Cypriot Mycenaean Fine Ware Earthenware Jug
Late Cycladic II/Late Helladic IIIB (1600-1200 BC). Height 18.1cm. Diameter 6cm, diameter of base 5cm
A ring-base jug with a squat, pear-shaped (piriform) body. It has a relatively tall, concave neck with a splaying rim, and a handle running from the rim to the shoulder. Made of hard pinkish-buff clay with a matte light beige slip, and decorated in lustrous brown paint. The outside decoration has a single line encircling the lower body, while two lines run around the upper body. Additional lines encircle the base of the neck and the rim. The shoulder is decorated with a frieze of chevrons alternating with circular “sea-anemone” motifs. The handle is also painted.
The jug was excavated by the Swedish Cyprus Expedition in 1930 at Enkomi, on the floor of a side chamber in Tomb 18. It has been part of the collection of the Medelhavsmuseet, Stockholm, Sweden (Inv. No.: E. 018 Sk:021) since 1930.
