Cypriot Bichrome II Earthenware Bowl

Cipro-Geometric I-II. (1050-850 BC). Height 10.3cm. Diameter 28cm, diameter of base 10.2cm

A bowl with a ring base, a wide conical body, and an inturned rim. Round horizontal handles are attached just below the rim. Made of hard buff clay with a matte buff slip, and decorated in matte brown and dark grey paint. On the exterior, the bottom is decorated with brown and grey concentric circles and grey transverse strokes on the base. The lower body features four grey-framed zigzag lines, four red M-shaped motifs, and grey latticed triangles, all framed by grey lines. Grey bands encircle the middle of the body, and another grey band runs around the rim. The handles are painted grey. On the interior, grey bands encircle the middle of the body, and grey concentric circles decorate the bottom.

The bowl was excavated by the Swedish Cyprus Expedition in 1930 at Amathus from level 20 in a chamber of Tomb 19. It has been part of the Cyprus collection of the Medelhavsmuseet, Stockholm, Sweden (Inv. No.: A. 019:003) since 1930.
