Cypriot Black Slip II Earthenware Amphora
Cipro-Geometric II-III. (950-700 BC). Height 15.6cm. Diameter 12.2cm, diameter of base 5.8cm
A small amphora with a conical base and a conical cavity underneath. The body is ovoid and decorated with vertical grooves. It has a wide, concave neck and a broad horizontal rim, with oval handles running from the rim down to the shoulder. Made of hard, greenish-buff clay and coated with a matte grey slip.
The amphora was excavated by the Swedish Cyprus Expedition in 1930 at Amathus from level 40, stratum 1 of a chamber in Tomb 7. It has been part of the Cyprus collection of the Medelhavsmuseet, Stockholm, Sweden (Inv. No.: A. 007:234) since 1930.
